Wednesday – Hearing God in Storms

Whispers | Hearing God In… Storms

Our lives often feel like a constant stream of small and big storms, don’t they? Struggles, wrestles, breakthroughs, pain, discontentment, dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, loneliness, lethargy, complacency and frustration can all feel like seasons of storms in our lives.

I love the story of Jesus sleeping in the bottom of the boat from Matthew 8. When the storm was raging, the disciples woke him up frantic, panicking for their very lives and Jesus responds with “You of little faith.” It wasn’t natural for them to trust in the presence of Jesus with them. They didn’t realize that even though He was sleeping, He was still there, with them. Fear caused them to forget the power of Jesus’ presence in the midst of the storm.

I’ve been there. I’ve been in and out of any one of the storms I listed above and all I know is that when I am in the midst of that storm, I need someone to remind me that Jesus is in the boat with me. I need someone to tell me not to be afraid for the Lord my God is with me. My storm so quickly and easily becomes bigger than the power of cross that resides within me to overcome.

Yes… we often have such little faith in the midst of the storm. Lack of faith blinds us to God’s presence in the midst of the storm and it causes us to withdraw from the people that God wants to use to remind us of His presence and power in the midst of our storm.

It does not come natural for us to have faith in the midst of the various storms we face but if we stop, pray, read His words of comfort through the Bible and reach out to others who have found peace in the midst of their storms, we will know…that we know… that we know that God is right there with us.
Do you find peace in the midst of your storms or is fear ruling your life?
